Hurricane delayed Halloween

Hi there friends,

I wanted to share something special my Husband's company did for their employees who were affected by Hurricane Sandy. We in the south are use to having hurricanes hit our area, and it is one of those things we come to expect. However, with the recent events our northern neighbors have had to endure, my heart is sad yet hopeful that things will get better for them soon.  In all this ciaos, life still goes on and Halloween was just a bit delayed. 11.6.12

Gulbrandsen Technologies had a planning event going on at Bear Creek Mountain Resort and Conference Center.  During the employees stay the company allowed those families without power or were displaced in the North East to come stay with their significant other while at the conference center. Since the kids of these families did not get to go Trick-or-Treating on the 31st, they asked all the employees at the conference to purchase some candy and allow those kids the opportunity to Trick-or-Treat hotel room to hotel. Now, this was not a conventional way to Trick-or-Treat, but none the less it is a way to feel normal in a tragic time. Here is a photo of some of the Halloween characters...

Adorable! or Should I say Scary?

I am happy our family is blessed to work with such a great company. Glad you guys are all doing well and our Prayers are with you during this difficult time.

Sammi-e

I wanted to Chronicle the Christmas journey of Sammi-e our elf. I will be updating along and along so keep posted on the Adventures of our small friend.

Here is part of his first visit since the summer. He got a hold of the cheerios and had a bit of fun. Sammi-e said he wanted to make sure that dad knew the O's were for Emily. Dad has a tendency to be on a see food diet. If he see's it he eats it. So Sammi-e wanted to be clear who these were for...

How you doin'
Sammi-e also got a hold of mom's iphone and had a few issues with the camera. You can see he was having a blast. I am sure Sammi-e is getting geared up for an excellent Christmas season. He also left us a note and said he had fun playing Angry Piggies on the phone as well. Keep posted I am sure Sammi-e will be back soon!

Super Tuesday!

Super Tuesday...
  • Day off from School for my daughter
  • Went to vote!
  • Rained most of the day
Well, being board and stuck in the house my daughter and I found a fun way to make smores with out the use of a fire. We decide to toast the marshmallows in... wait... Yes our toaster.

We proceeded to build our smores.. Gram Cracker, Hershey chocolate, marshmallows. And the results are... YUM!

Art- Holton Rower

I am excited to share one of my art projects. I had 37 students from 5K-8th Grade. All my student regardless of their age did a fantastic job with this POUR ART PROJECT!

Inspired by Holton Rower, we did our own mini paint pour art projects!
I've seen re-do's of this project around the internet, but much of what I did was based on the supplies I was able to obtain inexpensively. Thankfully, A local wood company Cox Industries, donated our wooden blocks. For paint we used the cheap acrylic stuff (50 cents a bottle from Walmart.) However, to make sure the paint did not crack we used a "Pour Medium" I found at Michael's Craft store in the fine art section.(approx. $14.99 per bottle)  This stuff is not cheap, but a cheaper substitute is "Glazing" found near the inexpensive acrylic paints. I mixed the paint to a thin consistancy and we began...

Each student received 3 small cups of paint. One wooden block that consisted of 4 inch sq 1, 1x4 and 1, 1x1x1 inch square dowel which my husband attached together with wood screws, and we put them on a heavy duty paper plate with a rim.

During class we talked about how colors made us feel or what colors represented for them, etc. Then, we started POURING! They had so much fun, and so did I. This can get messy so teachers if you plan on doing this project... wear overalls!

It took about a week for them to fully dry. Once dry, we were able to remove them from the paper plate either via scissors or some decided to rip it right off the paper still intact. Either way it worked. They turned out great.

I did have an extra challenge question for them to take home. Holton Rower's grandfather Alexander Calder invented the mobile. So, that was an extra tidbit to add to the lesson plan as extra credit. They also were responsible for writing down what their favorite color was and why.

Here are some photos of the final product:

So excited how this turned out! They all look great and we all had a wonderful time creating them. Check out the links below. This is what inspired this art project.
